Synopsis
A story of an ill-fated love affair between Billy, a fairground barker, and Julie, a young mill girl, is contrasted with a fairytale romance between Enoch, an ambitious fisherman, and Julie’s friend, Carrie, in this classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Set in Victorian New England, it is a story dealing with raw emotions as the young people try to come to terms with the circumstances surrounding Billy’s tragic death. Although a dark tale, the show is uplifting showing that ‘hope springs eternal’ when people face ‘the storm’. It is full of timeless musical numbers: Carousel Waltz, You’ll Never Walk Alone, If I Loved You, My Boy Bill, June is Bustin’ Out All Over, A Real Nice Clambake, When the Children are Asleep, What’s the use of Wond’ring and many more. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s own favourite musical – the show is given the LADOS song and dance treatment, for which it has a well-justified reputation.
